The Light’s Haunting ‘005’
By Miles Klee , March 28, 2013 Blackbookmag.com The Light is the moniker of one Steve Lemaire, a composer of music made to match visual art. His work has scored documentaries and short films. But what happens when he’s left to his own devices? When there’s nothing to soundtrack but life itself? You get “005.” Chilly and ethereal, yes, like many ambient instrumental pieces—but at the same time unusually restless, unwilling to settle into anything like a hypnotic pattern. No, there is some torque to how “005” forges ahead, often reaching little interior climaxes along the way. If this is where Lemaire is headed as a solo artist, we will eagerly expect more. With this kind of pretty post-rock he could tour with Eluvium and play nothing but rooms filled with pillows where they give you various feel-good prescription pills at the door. Hey, a lazy aesthete can dream.
